Australian universities have begun using artificial intelligence to mark students’ work, but institutions remain sharply divided over its use in student evaluations, even as the technology finds it way more widely into the teaching process, including the use of AI avatars in lecture theatres.
While Australia’s top universities have banned teaching staff from using AI to assess student’s work, other universities including Adelaide University, the University of Newcastle, Deakin University and RMIT allow AI tools to assist academic staff during the grading process as long as the assessor retains ultimate oversight.
